Madeline Gunn has been appointed principal of Epsom Girls Grammar School in Auckland.
Mrs Gunn has been acting principal this year since the resignation of Annette Sharp.
Before her move to Epsom Girls, Mrs Gunn spent 13 years at Diocesan School for Girls.
She has also been director of the school leadership centre at Auckland University.
Mrs Gunn will be busy in the next two years implementing new Ministry of Education curriculum guidelines.
"These involve a focus on students rather than subjects," she said.
"There will be a stronger emphasis on personal development, managing relationships, things like that.
"It's something prospective employers have been asking for."
