Greater Wellington Regional Council's 2015 annual report reveals there has been a steady improvement in the environment over the past few years.
The report includes data which are indicators of healthy environment and quality of life.
Air quality and fresh recreational water have improved since 2010 with 54 per cent of monitored fresh water recreation sites given grades of "fair, good or very good over the summer bathing months", an improvement on only 36 per cent in 2010.
There has also been a decrease in water use throughout the region, now sitting at a daily use of 351.7 litres per person, compared to 381.4 litres in 2010.
