English: Government will discuss giving financial support to Team NZ, America's Cup

The government is prepared to talk to Team New Zealand about putting money into the next Americas Cup, Prime Minister Bill English said.

English said there could be no better advertisement for New Zealand than a team of guys in their mid-20s, with world-beating technology, defeating what was the best in the world.

He told Mike Hosking's breakfast radio show the win is fantastic for the country and Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton.

English described Dalton as someone who earns confidence, has done a great job with the team and is someone the government could work with.

"I remember him helping pull all this together out of the defeat and lot of the internal problems they had way back.

"I'm sure we'll be hearing from him at some stage."

English said the win must be so satisfying for those people who kept the faith over the years, since the last bad defeat.

"It would seem pretty unreasonable then that they were going to get to where they've got to now and they deserve every bit of credit."

English confirmed discussions began last week with Auckland Mayor Phil Goff about a ticker tape welcome home parade.

He says those discussions will continue today as soon as the office opens.
