"I remember him helping pull all this together out of the defeat and lot of the internal problems they had way back.
"I'm sure we'll be hearing from him at some stage."
English said the win must be so satisfying for those people who kept the faith over the years, since the last bad defeat.
"It would seem pretty unreasonable then that they were going to get to where they've got to now and they deserve every bit of credit."
English confirmed discussions began last week with Auckland Mayor Phil Goff about a ticker tape welcome home parade.
He says those discussions will continue today as soon as the office opens.
