Retailers are developing guidelines over the sale of energy drinks.
The Association of Convenience Stores is concerned about the new 'energy shot' type of drinks being sold to children.
Spokesman Roger Bull says it follows the case of a 15-year-old girl who collapsed after consuming more than the recommended daily intake of energy shots.
He says the drinks are not governed by any legislation, and he believes they are not appropriate for children.
Roger Bull says while picking an age limit is difficult, he thinks anyone under 15 is too young for them.
The Association will be working with the Food Safety Authority to ensure retailers understand their responsibilities.
