KEY POINTS:
The Navy has begun to look for a replacement for its 20-year-old tanker and replenishment ship HMNZS Endeavour.
The ship was built by Hyundai in South Korea for $27 million and commissioned 20 years ago.
However, the Navy said it was nearing the end of its 25-year lifespan and it wanted a more versatile replacement.
Captain Fred Keating said the Navy wanted a ship with a "joint support" capability and a ship which would have commonality with the new multi-role ship, HMNZS Canterbury.
