New regulations covering the area around the Auckland Harbour Bridge and the Motuihe Channel are now in force.
Harbourmaster John Lee-Richards says the regulations were introduced following an accident in the channel and complaints about congestion around the bridge.
A 400m-wide fast passenger ferry lane on the northern side now separates the ferries from recreational fishermen who use the southern side of the channel.
A study of the area around the bridge highlighted risks when sailboats were preparing for the start of a race.
The new directions define the limits of the bridge precautionary area and the way boats should navigate, and lists prohibited activities.
The full regulations will be posted on the ARC website (see link below).

One of the main messages in the WaterSafe Auckland Safe Summer campaign that is now in full swing is proper supervision of children.
WaterSafe executive officer Sandy Harrop says too many toddlers drowned last year and it was hoped the campaign, with the theme Wise Up To The Water, would make parents more aware of the dangers.

The main racing programmes for 2006 don't start until later this month. The main activity on the Waitemata this weekend is the final two days of the 12ft skiff internationals out of the Auckland Sailing Club at Okahu Bay. Some close racing from top boats is predicted if the strong breezes continue.
Organisations planning events on or in the Waitemata or Manukau Harbours should register in advance with the Auckland Regional Council on (09) 366 2000. The 24-hour response number for the ARC maritime unit is (09) 362 0397.
