Brash assumption: Dr Marguerite Elgin writes: "As a female doctor, I received unsolicited mail from the National Party today, addressed to 'Dr & Mrs ... ' and signed by Don Brash. I wonder is this because he assumes all doctors are male or an acknowledgment that since the Civil Union legislation has been passed, I may now have a same-sex spouse?"

Tizard cloned? Rose Carr of Herne Bay arrived home on Monday and realised she had just missed two men canvassing for Labour. "They saw us returning and must have decided not to come back after they had talked to our neighbour," says Rose. "I wonder if it was because they had left Judith Tizard's card, complete with photo, with a hand-written note that said 'Sorry to miss you. J. T.' Do they just forget what honesty actually is once they become politicians?"

Common sense just a slogan for United Future: A reader writes: "United Future supporters were out on Monday brandishing signs that said 'Bring back common sense!' ... Great. I agree we need more common sense in this country. But tell me, what's so sensible about wearing reflector vests and waving your arms at motorists as they enter the notorious Royal Oak Roundabout at 5.30pm?"

It isn't illegal in Canada to wear a T-shirt that has a picture of a gun and says "Rule no. 1 be armed." But Toronto police say they are going to crack down on people wearing them anyway. "The seizure of the shirts may be in question, but if you are wearing one of these shirts, you are going to be hassled by the cops," said Sgt Rob Hargan. He says police have already seized two shirts from people wearing them. "We don't want people wearing them, and we don't want them on the street," he said. (Source: Reason.com)

A reader writes: "Some time back I purchased Norton antivirus software for my home PC. With my purchase I received a spam blocker for my email account. Spam is automatically blocked and diverted to a 'spam' box. Yesterday I received an email from my ISP Xtra, however it was diverted to my spam box immediately. I checked my spam box to see the contents of the email. To my surprise it was an email trying to sell me their new anti-spam filter. While in my spam box, I noticed that my spam filter had also been diverting all email from Xtra, including those bloody annoying newsletters they keep sending. I had a great laugh at Telecom's expense."
