Hone Harawira has never been one for convention and protocol. Until just a few days ago, the new Te Tai Tokerau MP didn't even own a tie. He was given one following an election speech - the problem is the only suit he owns is the one he wore to his wedding more than 30 years ago.
The former Maori activist and protester - who says he draws inspiration from Muhammad Ali, Sid Jackson, Nelson Mandela and Maori Marsden - last night took Te Tai Tokerau from Labour's Dover Samuels as a new era in Maori politics was ushered in throughout the country.
For Harawira, Parliament is likely to come as a major culture shock.
He isn't particularly fond of politicians and struggles with the idea of having to do deals and make concessions. "I don't know how I am going to deal with it - the way they dress, the way they act, the way they talk ... none of it is part of my current lifestyle. "
