If an offroad vehicle, for use on private land only, is being towed on a public road using its own drawbar, is it required to be registered and have a WOF? Should it be registered as a trailer? Graham Waters, Auckland.
Land Transport NZ says that as the vehicle is not being used as a motor vehicle on a public road, it does not need to be registered, licensed or warranted, and neither does any vehicle under tow. However, a vehicle under tow must be in a safe condition to be towed with an A-frame or a drawbar. The legal requirements are the same as towing with a rope, and can be found under Section 19 of the Traffic Regulations 1976. A guide to safe towing can be found at the Land Transport NZ website (see link below) or you can ring the police, as they enforce the law.
Will the Sulphur Beach walkway, from the pier under the harbour bridge to the pedestrian tunnel, be reopened after all the motorway widening work is done north of the bridge? If so, when will it be ready? Nina Kelly, Northcote.
The tunnel has been closed so that new electricity ducts for the North Shore can be installed. The area needs re-fencing to make it safe, but the tunnel should reopen at the end of the month.
For the last month or two I have noticed large blue and white containers sitting on a very narrow gantry on the centre span of the harbour bridge above lanes 3 and 4. What are they and how safe are they up there? Raewyn Campbell, Auckland.
They are tins of paint, used for repainting the bridge's overarch. They are stored there so that workers can't kick them over, and there is a guard rail not visible from below that keeps them in place. And they are not always the same tins - they are replaced as they are used up.
I recall the first rule of the road as "keep as far left as possible". I often see cyclists two abreast - is that legal? Ross Stevenson, Mission Bay.
It certainly is. Cyclists may ride two abreast except when they are passing something, including another bike, when they must ride in single file.
