Q: In 1999 I wrote to Auckland City Council asking that a bus stop in Onehunga Harbour Rd be moved from a blind corner to the straight by The Landing restaurant. The transport committee said it would be done after kerbing and channelling work on the road was completed in 2000. We have a lovely new footpath now, but the bus stop hasn't moved. Why? Tony Taylor, Henderson.
A: A council oversight is why. It agrees that the bus stop's present site is impractical and downright dangerous and plans to move it further west. However, the new location needs a bus bay, so it is more costly. If the new site proves feasible, the job will be added to the project list for 2006-2007.
Q: Are more bus lanes planned for the Northwestern Motorway? At the moment they go only as far as Patiki Rd. And are there any plans for park-and-ride like on the North Shore? Kim Bladen, West Auckland.
A: There are about 4km of bus lanes citybound and just over 1km westbound between the Rosebank and Waterview ramps. More bus lanes are planned for Te Atatu to Rosebank citybound and westbound lanes round Lincoln Rd. Some of the congestion will be relieved with the widening to six lanes of the motorway between Te Atatu and Royal Rd, and more lanes between Newton Rd and Western Springs. I know of no park-and-ride stations planned for the Northwestern.
Q: I walk to work from Parnell to downtown, and have a real problem with driveways and entries to parking areas that cross the footpaths. What are the rules? Frank van der Zwaag, Parnell.
A: The Road Code 2005 says drivers must give way to people using the footpath when entering or leaving a driveway. But you have a duty of care, as do all road-users, on foot or in a vehicle.
