Get moving: Bus stop will be moved

Q: I am intrigued by a bus stop in Upland Rd in Remuera, opposite the end of Ventnor Rd. An intending passenger would have to stand on the road as there is no room between the curb, agapanthus plants and a fence. Can the bus shelter be moved? Noni Kenny, Remuera.

A: The council has investigated and says there are some safety issues, so they will find a new place for the bus stop where people can wait on the footpath.

Q: A big cause of congestion on the Southern Motorway is at Mt Wellington, where the three lanes reduce to two. When the Sylvia Park precinct is finished the traffic will double. What is proposed to increase this part of the motorway to three lanes? Ken Guptill, Papatoetoe.

A: There is no provision in Transit's 10-year plan to widen this section of the motorway to three lanes. Improvements to the local road network, including the Mt Wellington Highway, are planned by Auckland City and expected to cope with the extra traffic. However, the off-ramp northbound is to get a left-turn slip lane aimed at easing congestion.

Q: Has there been any progress on the Onehunga branch railway line? Leo Neal, Auckland.

A: No decisions have been made yet. The Auckland Regional Council's passenger transport committee is very keen that a second Mangere Bridge should include provision for a railway line. This link would go to the airport, and make good use of the existing Onehunga line.

Q: Are there any plans to widen the Newmarket end of Boston Rd, so that the left and right-turning lanes could be made longer? Karyn Wiles, Auckland.

A: No. The council people have been out to have a look (they really do, you know), and they say the intersection is perfectly fine as it is.

Q: What are the two large structures just before the Grafton onramp? Bob Hanrahan, Takapuna.

A: They are supports for the new Port to Northern Motorway link. The third and last support cannot be built yet as it will be plumb in the middle of the current Hobson St to Northwestern Motorway link. When the new Nelson St offramp is opened, the Hobson St onramp to the Northwestern will be realigned, allowing the last column to go in.
