No one was inside a partially submerged car found in the sea near Christchurch this morning.
Police were called about the maroon Honda Civic at Port Levy just after 8am.
Police and two fire crews were sent from Diamond Harbour and Christchurch to Banks Peninsula on reports a car was in the sea.
A police spokeswoman said police and the fire service, joined by the Coastguard, were trying to establish what had happened.
Witnesses were also being questioned.
