Emergency services at apartment building in central Wellington

Fire and Emergency is dealing with an incident at the Soho Apartments on Taranaki Street. Police are also in attendance.

A fire in a central Wellington apartment has been extinguished.

Fire and Emergency was called to the Soho Apartments on Taranaki St at 11.30am.

Shift commander Carlos Dempsey said a power box on the 15th floor had caught fire.

Residents were evacuated and crews were brought in from throughout Wellington and the Hutt Valley to fight the blaze.

Dempsey said nobody was injured and the fire has since been put out.

A fire investigator will establish the cause.

Residents are now being allowed back into the building and Fire crews with tanks on their back have walked out of the entrance.

About nine fire engines had earlier parked up outside the apartments.

The apartments are just metres from Wellington's Courtenay Place.
