An urgent mission is underway to rescue a seriously injured fisherman offshore from the southwestern side of Stewart Island.
The Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) is co-ordinating the rescue
RCCNZ rescue co-ordinator Keith Allen said it appeared the fisherman was using a roller which brings in fishing nets when he got caught in the equipment.
"He is currently conscious, but is suffering serious injuries including a broken shoulder and leg."
A rescue helicopter with doctor on board was expected to reach the man this afternoon. It is likely he will then be flown to Kew Hospital in Invercargill.
RCCNZ was informed of the accident at about 12.30pm.
The fisherman was the only person on board the vessel when the accident happened. Two people from other fishing vessels are with him now.
