Dunedin Hospital's emergency ward was evacuated early this morning after reports of smoke in a room.
Firefighters were called to the hospital about 1.15am when an alarm went off. They also received a 111 emergency call reporting smoke in a room at the clinical services building.
Investigations revealed the smoke was coming from a faulty light fitting, a Fire Service spokeswoman said.
Firefighters left the scene less than an hour later but the emergency ward of the hospital was evacuated as a precaution.
