Basement Jaxx has a cool name but how he got it is not so stylish. The three-month-old labrador-cross pup was abandoned when his owners moved out and left him in the basement. He was discovered by a landlord who heard him whining while doing a property inspection. Basement Jaxx wasn't in good shape when he arrived at the SPCA's Mangere animal village on December 6.
He had a pus-covered eye, says animal attendant Emma Ginsberg, who named him after the British band, but he has now recovered and is full of bounce.
"He's a high-energy pup so he'll need a lot of training," says Ginsberg.
SPCA's general manager Jane Thompson says Christmas is the busiest time of year for the SPCA. Last week the animal village was taking in more than 70 animals a day.
"People just don't want to make arrangements for them over the break."
