There will be a notable first for the Wairarapa Greyhound Racing Club at their TAB meeting at Solway Showgrounds next Monday afternoon.
The electronic traps which
have recently been installed at the 545m and 290m start points will officially come into use
for the first time there although they have been trialled successfully over the past fortnight or so.
Committee man Dave Amundsen said the new traps were a vast improvement on the manually-operated starting boxes they replaced.
"They provide for greater consistency in the starting procedure and that's a big plus for both trainers and the betting public," he said
Amundsen is optimistic Monday's meeting will have a full card of 10 races with trainers from all the country having expressed an interest in having their teams compete on what is now the only grass track racing venue in New Zealand.
"There have been plenty of inquiries from trainers but whether that computes into actual entries & well, we won't know that until nominations close tomorrow," Amundsen said.
Monday's meeting is the first of four to be raced at Solway Showgrounds over the next month or so with the Wairarapa club racing there again on Sunday, December 28 and in mid-January and the Wellington club on Sunday, January 4.
