Electricity sector probed

Parliament's commerce select committee will hold an inquiry into the electricity industry.

The committee said last night that it would look at what electricity generation companies did to ensure a balance between thermal and hydro generation, their planning for capacity development and how well the corporate separation of generation and retail worked.

It would also investigate whether the retail electricity sector wa acting competitively and whether lines companies' profits had been excessive.

Submissions close on May 22.
