Extra firefighters were called in to help contain an electrical fire at a Waikato chicken processing plant.
Northern fire communications shift manager Colin Underdown said the callout to Ingham's plant on Waihekau Rd, Waitoa, just before 10am today, went to a third alarm due to the presence of an LPG tank in the room where the fire started.
However, it didn't affect the processing area where the chickens were kept, he said.
Fire crews were unable to tackle the fire with water, due to the gas, so instead were using dry powder as they had to wait for power authorities to arrive to turn the power off.
Underdown said they needed the extra crews to help contain the fire until they could extinguish it properly.
