KEY POINTS:
The Lyttelton tunnel was closed for nearly an hour and-a-half after smoke was seen coming out of the Christchurch end.
Tunnel staff investigated and traffic was cut down to one lane at 6.30am this morning.
Inspector Doug Parker said it is believed the smoke was caused by an electrical fault.
The tunnel has now reopened.
