Hamilton police are praising the actions of an elderly woman pedestrian who saved a man from falling from a bridge over the Waikato River yesterday morning.
They say the woman went to the aid of the man while more able-bodied motorists drove on by.
Acting Senior Sergeant Jason McKay says the woman, believed to be in her seventies, was waiting with two friends when she noticed a man sitting on the opposite ledge of the Claudelands Bridge.
He appeared to be in a distressed state.
She went over to speak to him and discovered he was apparently coming down after taking methamphetamine.
She struggled to stop him from slipping or falling and two men eventually came to her assistance, one of them flagging down a police car.
