A 96-year-old woman had to be rescued from the 11th floor of a central Auckland apartment building yesterday when a large fire broke out.
Fire Service northern communications centre shift manager Megan Ruru said emergency services were called to the H47 Apartments complex on Hobson St shortly after 8pm where a blaze had broken out on the ground floor.
"We got messages that there were people on level 11 on the stairwell requiring assistance because one of them was 96 years old."
Firefighters helped the woman down to the street where she was treated for exhaustion and taken to Auckland Hospital.
"I think the whole issue of fire alarms going and trying to get out of the building may have caused her to have a few problems," Ruru said.
