An elderly Whitianga woman with a broken hip had be flown by rescue helicopter to hospital to avoid traffic jams after a large slip blocked a main Coromandel highway.
State Highway 25A is today impassable after a giant 50m landslide fell across the road near the summit yesterday.
Police say the scenic Coromandel Forest Park road is unlikely to be reopen until Thursday at the earliest.
Faced with major traffic delays those treating the 86-year-old who broke her hip after a fall in her home decided to bypass the road clogged by holidaymakers negotiating the collapsing hillside and fly her to hospital by helicopter.
The woman was taken to by ambulance to the Whitianga Airfield where she was met by the helicopter and flown to Waikato Hospital for treatment.
