Elderly woman and grandchild escape Massey house unharmed as it is engulfed in flames

Fire and Emergency Services were called to a Massey house this morning after it became engulfed in flames.

A Herald photographer on the scene was told by fire crew that a woman and a younger relative were at the address but managed to get out.

It is understood the woman was home at the time with her 5-year-old grandchild.

A relative of the pair told the Herald firefighters were still at the scene trying to determine what caused the blaze.

A Fire and Emergency spokesman said fire crews had been called to an address on Hewlett Rd around 9.40am today.

The spokesman said the crews were still on the scene and would be investigating.

Around four fire engines, three police cars and one ambulance are on the scene and the area around the house has been cordoned off from the public.
