Two trampers have been rescued after becoming exhausted on a West Coast track this morning.
The men, aged 71 and 78, had been on a five-day walk on the Old Ghost Road track near Westport when they activated their personal locator beacon about 8.30am.
Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand mission coordinator Conrad Reynecke said the men, from Invercargill, were well prepared and equipped but the difficult terrain got the better of them.
"They found themselves unable to continue the tramp and have done the right thing in activating their beacon before their condition got worse."
A Garden City rescue helicopter winched them to safety.
