Police are seeking witnesses after an elderly couple were badly injured when crossing a road in Cambridge this morning.
The man and woman were standing on a median strip at the intersection of State Highway One and Albert St in the Waikato town shortly before 10am when a truck and trailer unit drove past.
Sergeant Gordon Grantham, of Cambridge police, said it was unclear what had happened and whether the vehicle had struck them.
The truck driver noticed the couple lying in the road in his rear view mirror and stopped to help.
They were taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance. The man suffered critical head injuries while the woman was in a serious condition.
Police had spoken to the truck driver but had been unable to find any independent witnesses to verify what had happened, Mr Grantham said.
They urged anyone who saw what happened to come forward.
