An elderly motorcyclist whose scooter slammed into the back of a stationary police car this morning has died of his injuries.
The incident happened on Maunganui Rd near the intersection of Tweed St about 11.30am when the police car pulled over a motorist in relation to a traffic matter.
The patrol car had stopped and its red and blue warning lights were flashing when the motorcyclist crashed into the back, police said.
The 83-year-old rider was taken to Tauranga Hospital but died of his injuries there this afternoon.
Western Bay of Plenty area commander Inspector Mike Clement said an investigation into the crash was under way.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority had also been notified as the crash involved a police vehicle.
Mr Clement said the police officer was shaken by the incident and counselling and support had been provided for him.
"Until the crash investigation is complete, it is impossible to comment further or speculate about how it occurred.
"Obviously our thoughts are with the family right now and we will continue to provide them with support."
The officer and the motorist who had been stopped were uninjured.
