The elderly man who died at a Nelson beach on Monday evening despite attempts to rescue him has been named.
He was Gordon Hadfield, 74, of Nelson.
Hadfield was swimming at Tahunanui Beach about 7.30pm when he got into difficulty.
A member of the public attempted to rescue the man but was unsuccessful. He died at the scene.
His death will be referred to the Coroner.
