KEY POINTS:
An elderly man's name was suppressed when he faced 25 sex charges in Wanganui District Court today.
The offences, relating to two boys aged between nine and 15, allegedly happened when the man was coaching junior rugby league and softball in Auckland in the 1970s and 1980s.
Auckland City adult sexual assault team arrested the 75-year-old man in Wanganui.
He has been charged with 25 counts of indecent acts, sodomy, attempted indecent acts and attempted sodomy.
In a brief court appearance this afternoon, the man made no plea and was remanded to reappear on February 22.
He was granted bail, but was told he would have to reapply for name suppression to continue at his next hearing.
Detective Leone Scott said the arrest was the result of a long investigation into the man's activities.
"The offences allegedly occurred when he was coaching school boy softball and rugby league at the Metro Softball Club and the Mt Albert Rugby League junior club respectively, throughout the 1970s and 1980s," Mrs Scott said.
Police want to hear from people who may have been a member of - or associated with - the Metro Softball Club or the Mt Albert Rugby League Junior Club during the 1970s and 1980s.
