An 80-year-old man riding a mobility scooter brought cars, vans, buses and titan trucks to their knees as he traversed the Tauranga harbour bridge yesterday.
Constable Andrew Crockett said a highway patrol car stopped the man as he crossed the bridge on his epic journey from Mount Maunganui to Matua.
The man was driving his vehicle in the left-hand lane, trailed by a procession of slow-moving traffic.
"His understanding was that he could drive on the road provided he kept to the left," said Constable Crockett.
"However, the safest place for him was on the footpath."
After a short discussion on road safety the man continued on his way, this time on the path.
