KEY POINTS:
A 65-year-old Tauranga man is in a serious condition in hospital after he was struck on a pedestrian crossing in a hit and run last night.
The man was hit by a car about 9pm as he was crossing Otumoetai Road.
Tauranga Police Sergeant Wayne Lambert said the male driver of the car failed to stop and was later arrested by police after they received information from another person.
The man has been charged with failing to stop to render assistance at an accident and is likely to face further charges.
Alcohol was involved in the accident, he said.
The 65-year-old man was airlifted to Waikato Hospital where he underwent surgery.
