An elderly Opotiki man remains in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital after crashing his campervan near Matamata yesterday.
However, the man's wife died in the blaze on Tauranga Rd, Te Poi, just after 4pm.
Northern fire communications shift manager Jaron Philips said the campervan was well involved in flames when they arrived at the scene.
The body of the man's wife was recovered from the caravan, he said.
The man received burns to about 50 per cent of his body but those first to the scene managed to submerge him in cold water until he was taken by the Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter to Waikato Hospital.
