Elderly man dies in collision

A driver who died when his car and a truck collided south of Whangarei last night was a 62-year-old man.

The man has not been named by police but it has been confirmed he was driving the car when the vehicles smashed together on State Highway 1 500 metres north of the turnoff to the coast resort of Waipu.

The truck driver was unhurt.

The road was closed for several hours and traffic diverted.
