Mr Brackenbury said they walked down the road to see their elderly neighbours had lost control of their car coming out of the driveway and landed in another neighbour's garden.
"They were in a bit of shock. We went and got them a couple of blankets."
A police patrol had been in the area and came across the incident soon after it happened. Paramedics and firefighters were also quickly on the scene.
It is understood the two elderly victims were discharged from hospital by midday yesterday. Mr Brackenbury said he was not sure exactly why the woman had been taking her husband to hospital but he understood he had "taken a turn".
The neighbour whose property the couple crashed into did not want to be named, but said he slept through the whole event. Yesterday morning he noticed the vehicle had narrowly missed a car parked in front of his property.
"It could have been worse, and it must have been very upsetting for them," he said.
The couple driving the crashed car would not comment.
Meanwhile, In a second car crash overnight Saturday, two drivers had a lucky escape after a near head-on south of Greytown.
Greytown fire chief Harry Howard said fire, ambulance and police were called to the crash near the Greytown cemetery on Tauherenikau Rd just after midnight.
Both cars were written off, with damage down the passenger side of each of them.
"It was a glancing blow. It was quite lucky or skills from the drivers, because a couple of inches in each direction and it would've been a head-on."
The two drivers, a man and woman, were assessed by paramedics at the scene but not taken to hospital.
There were no passengers in either of the cars.
