The final scoreline did not tell the whole story when Eketahuna beat Old Boys University 63-0 in their Wellington premier division women's rugby match at Eketahuna on Saturday.
Eketahuna struggled to get any fluency into their game through most of the first half, with basic handling and passing errors the main culprit. OBU were competitive, especially in the forward exchanges, where they won a decent share of quality ball.
It was a much more efficient Eketahuna who took the field in the second spell, however, and in the last 20 minutes in particular they ran in some fine tries as the opposition noticeably tired.
"That first half was average, the second a lot better," Eketahuna coach Sid Tatana said. "They [OBU] tried hard, it wasn't a walkover."
Leading the way for Eketahuna up front was converted flanker Jesse Bennett, who continues to make an excellent transition from her usual inside back role.
In the backs, Black Fern Rebecca Mahoney impressed with both her kicking and running skills, Maia Tua-Davidson often pierced the defence in midfield, and there was some determined running from wings Maria Edwards and Cheryl Moir - the latter a newcomer from Australia who is shaping as a very useful addition to the already powerful Eketahuna rearguard.
