The Eketahuna connection featured prominently as Wellington Pride opened their national women's rugby competition campaign with a convincing 26-5 win over Otago Spirit at Petone on Saturday.
None more so than first-five Rebecca Mahoney (nee Hull) who finished with a points tally of 16 after landing four penalties and two conversions.
Her educated left boot ensured Otago were kept pinned in their own territory for long periods.
Wellington's first try scoring opportunity was created by Eketahuna captain Perri Tatana playing at lock. She burst away from a lineout about the halfway mark before kicking ahead and forcing a five-metre scrum from which Wellington almost scored. Minutes later they were awarded a penalty which Mahoney duly slotted.
Other Eketahuna players in centre Shakira Baker and No.8 Emma Aldsworth were also signalled out for strong performances, particularly on defence.
Wellington Pride continue their national competition programme with a match against the Black Ferns-laden Auckland team at the Hutt recreation ground this coming Saturday, starting at 2.30pm.
