Eketahuna are aiming for a big win in their Wellington premier division women's rugby match with Wainuiomata at Eketahuna tomorrow.
The confidence in the Eketahuna camp was boosted by their strong performance against defending champions Johnsonville last weekend, a game in which they were beaten 31-14 after being just three points in arrears going into the last 10 minutes of play.
That effort certainly bodes well for them tomorrow as just a week or two previous Johnsonville had racked up 100pts against Wainuiomata in a game which was apparently called off 15 minutes from the scheduled end.Eketahuna coach Cory Miller says nothing less than the maximum five competition points will be acceptable for Eketahuna which means they not only have to win but also score four or more tries. "We have to put them away comfortably, that's all there is to it," he said.
New Zealand World Cup-winning rugby league fullback from last year, Maia Tua-Davidson, made her first appearance for Eketahuna in the Johnsonville match. She impressed with the solidness of her defence but she won't be playing tomorrow and former New Zealand women's soccer rep Michele Clarke takes her place
Also returning to the fold for Eketahuna is speedy winger Maria Edwards, who was their leading try scorer (15) when they were runners-up in the Manawatu competition last year.
Coach Miller wants to give Edwards and other strong running backs like Rebecca Hull, Shakira Baker and Clarke every chance to test the Wainuiomata defence and he knows the easiest way for that to happen is to dominate the forward exchanges
"We have to focus on doing the simple things well and the tries should come, that's the plan anyway", he said.
Tomorrow's match will kickoff at 1pm.
