A helicopter is being used to dampen hot spots following an eight hectare fire in the Wellington suburb of Wainuiomata overnight.
The fire started at 2am from a car fire and burnt south towards Coasts Rd, Central Fire Communications shift manager Jan Wills said.
Eight rural fire crews attended at the height of the blaze.
The fire has since been contained and a 30-strong ground crew and a helicopter were mopping up the remnants this morning, Ms Wills said.
Due to the remote location of the car fire, the fire was believed to have been suspicious.
