Seven whales have stranded on 90 Mile Beach in Northland.

Whale rescue group Project Jonah says the mammals are believed to be pygmy killer whales which ran ashore last night.

Medics and Department of Conservation staff are on standby to help the relatively small whales get back to sea.

Last night 7 whales were found stranded on 90 mile beach. We are coordinating a response with @docgovtnz and have put our medics on standby. The whales are thought to be pygmy killer whales, but we require clearer photos of the head shape (morphology) before confirming this. pic.twitter.com/kX79lSrqhy
