A special ceremony will be held in Christchurch today to recognise the efforts of police and other emergency services after the fatal February 22, 2011 earthquake.
Police Commissioner Peter Marshall will present the first 100 Canterbury Earthquake Citation ribbons to Canterbury police staff.
The red and black ribbon, created to recognise the efforts of police and other services in the response to the disaster, will eventually be given to 3600 police staff from across New Zealand and Australia. More than 1000 are from Canterbury.
Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker and representatives of the armed forces and emergency services will be at the ceremony at HMNZS Pegasus in Christchurch, at 10am today.
The citation follows the presentation of plaques to districts and service centres, and also certificates of appreciation to more than 5000 police staff who worked on Operation Earthquake or who helped support the traumatic events of February 22.
