Research from the University of California, LA has shown that by the middle of this century summer Arctic sea ice will be so thin that ships will be able to travel directly over the North Pole.
The researchers worked on the basis of two scenarios - the first assuming a 25% increase in greenhouse gas emissions, the second on an increase of 35%. Both projections came up with the same result: ice-breaking ships will be able to travel the route.
