The Auckland City Council wants low level economic development on Great Barrier Island.
It is one of the changes proposed in the revamp of planning rules for the Hauraki Gulf islands in Auckland City's District Plan.
Environment, Heritage and Urban Form Committee chairwoman Christine Caughey says there is room for eco-tourism development on Great Barrier. She says the island seems to be a drawcard for a lot of backpackers and people who come to New Zealand for the green experience it can offer.
Ms Caughey says the Gulf is not only for tourists, but for Aucklanders to escape urban life and enjoy the natural environment. People have until mid-December to lodge submissions on the proposed district plan.
