KEY POINTS:
The death of a teenager after the car he was in crashed in Dairy Flat, north of Albany, on Monday has brought the Easter road toll to five.
Jamie Lance McElrea, 17, of Orewa, died on Tuesday in hospital of head injuries.
Northern district communications media adviser Kevin Loughlin said the vehicle Mr McElrea was in had been driven both "recklessly and at speed".
Police are looking for any witnesses to the crash that happened about 6.30pm on Kahikatea Flat Rd.
Mr Loughlin said the driver had apparently lost control of the vehicle, which then veered off the road and rolled several times.
Three of the four occupants, who were not wearing seatbelts, were thrown from the car.
The three survivors were in hospital in a stable condition, Mr Loughlin said.
Some witnesses have reported that the blue Subaru was being driven recklessly and that it was overtaking other vehicles on Pine Valley Rd, at speed, before the crash.
Police are also appealing for a possible witness to come forward after a car crashed into an Auckland motorway bridge support yesterday, critically injuring a boy and injuring a man.
Police say the Toyota Corona hit the support on the Northwestern Motorway near the Lincoln Rd offramp while travelling towards the city about 3pm.
The 39-year-old male driver is in Auckland City Hospital with serious injuries while the 5-year-old boy is in a critical condition in Starship hospital.
Witnesses told police the male Maori driver of a purple van, possibly a Mitsubishi L300, had stopped and assessed the scene before speeding off. Anyone with information should contact Constable Karl Bevin of the police serious crash unit on 09 481 0307.
