Last year's finalists East Coast and Marist will do battle at Whareama when matches in the Wairarapa-Bush premier division rugby competition continue tomorrow.
The Coasters will field a side which will be largely similar to that which created history by coming from behind to win the title for the very first time but not so the Marist line-up.
Going on what they fielded in their win over Pioneer last weekend they have changed dramatically with promising youngsters being liberally sprinkled through their team and that, of course, raises the question of whether their lack of experience will count against them on this occasion.
It was no surprise though to see Marist at least trying to be inventive in their back play as new coach Nathan Couch was always a leader in that domain
and while their effort was marred by regular bouts of poor passing and handling they did look sharp when things went according to plan.
First-five Kahu Matenga and fullback Murray Gleeson showed talent above the norm and it will be interesting to follow their progress as the season unfolds.
East Coast were in an attacking frame of mind as well last weekend, running in seven tries in their big win over Puketoi, and it's hard to imagine them adopting any different tactics tomorrow. Speedsters Luke Shanks and Nick Olson will be their two main attacking weapons.
An East Coast victory appeals as the most logical result but Marist should give them a decent run for their money.
Eketahuna failed by just a solitary point to upset Gladstone last Saturday and look set for another nail-biter when they play Martinborough at Eketahuna. The southerners are a young side who will have plenty of hustle and bustle while Eketahuna will probably see dominating the forward exchanges as their best chance of victory.
The home advantage might be just enough to give Eketahuna a narrow edge.
Masterton Red Star returned in style to premier division play with their success over Martinborough and they will be fancying their chances of making it two on end when they play Greytown at their own Colombo Road grounds in Masterton.
Greytown do, however, have some hard nuts in their pack and they will be doing themselves a huge favour if they can deny the speedy Masterton Red Star backs little in the way of quality ball.
Carterton is at home to Puketoi who will be looking to bounce back from their big loss to East Coast. Expect the forward battle to be a physical affair but Carterton should have enough flair in their backs to get the desired result.
The Memorial Park encounter between Pioneer and Gladstone should be an interesting one.
A somewhat new-look Gladstone team will start favourites but is sure to receive a hurry up from a mainly young Pioneer squad which showed definite promise in their loss to Marist. Different tactics are likely to be applied here with Gladstone looking to their forwards to call the tune and Pioneer banking on their backs to give them a winning advantage.
East Coast victory most logical result
