East Coast have a slender two-point lead over Masterton Red Star in the battle to win the Chris Kapene Memorial Trophy which goes to the pacesetters at the end of the first full round of matches in the Wairarapa-Bush premier division rugby competition.
With three series of games still to be played East Coast have the same five win-one loss record as Masterton Red Star but have accumulated two more bonus points than them.
That puts the John Pereira-coached Coasters on 24pts with Masterton Red Star on 22pts, followed by Carterton 19, Martinborough 18, Gladstone 15, Pioneer 14, Marist 11, Eketahuna 10, Greytown 9 and Puketoi 1.
In the senior reserves competition Carterton is up front with 24pts, two ahead of Martinborough on 22. Then come Pioneer 19, Masterton Red Star 19, Greytown 10, East Coast 9, Featherston 6, Tuhirangi 5, Eketahuna 5, Marist 1 and Gladstone 1.
Six of the senior reserves teams Carterton, Martinborough, Masterton Red Star, Eketahuna, Marist and Gladstone have played five matches with all others having played four.
