The east coast of the North Island was shaken by moderate earthquake early this morning measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale.
The quake struck at 3.51am, and was centred 100km east of Tolaga Bay at a depth of 11km, the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS) said.
It was likely to have been felt in Gisborne, the institute said.
