A magnitude 3.9-quake struck in the Manawatu region at 1.25pm this afternoon.
It was centred 20 kilometres west of Foxton at a depth of 30 kilometres.
Minutes later, at 1.31pm, there was a quake in Canterbury, measuring three on the scale.
It was located 10 kilometres south of Christchurch, at a depth of five kilometres.
