An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale struck near Gisborne this morning.
The city was damaged by an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale on December 20. That quake was centred 50km offshore southeast of the city at a depth of 40km and was followed by several aftershocks.
The earthquake measured today was 30km southeast of Gisborne at a depth of 30km. It was recorded at 6.58am. Gisborne police said there were no immediate reports of damage.
GNS Science said the earthquake would have been felt in Gisborne.
