A 4.7 magnitude earthquake has rattled the south Island 40km north west of Te Anau shortly before 7pm.

GeoNet has classified the quake, which was 103km deep, as weak.

Nearly 240 people reported feeling the quake with GeoNet's "felt it" feature.
