A 5.1 earthquake struck this afternoon in Hawke's Bay and was felt widely in the North Island, GNS Science reported.
The quake was centred 20 km west of Porangahau, at a depth of 30km, striking at 12.33pm.
It was felt as far south as Wellington in the north, Hawera in the west and Taradale in the north.
